| Essential oils |
| Essential oils are chemical substances produced from natural sources, which include plants, leaves, flowers, roots, berries, fruits and wood. A few plants do not contain any essential oils but the majority do, and it is believed that in these, the oil functions in much the same way as the human hormonal system, trigging growth and providing a balancing effect on the plant's health. To a greater or lesser extent, all essential oils have the ability to fight infection, whether the cause is fungal, viral or bacterial. Consequently, it is more than likely that they benefit the plant in the same way, protecting it from disease and providing a greater chance for survival of the species. Each essential oil has its own personality, and like synthetically produced perfumes, has a top, mid and base note. Here are some examples: Rose, Tangerine, Ylang-Ylang These usually come from flower based oils and are useful for treating the nervous system. Vetivert, Rosemary, Peppermint From leaf or stem sources used as a stimulant to circulation and digestion. Sandalwood, Patchouli, Frankincense Usually from barks, wood or roots, thay help with excretion of toxins. |

How do They Work? The essential oils used in aroma therapy affect us on two different levels, psychological and physiological. The psychological response is triggered by our sense of smell which stimulates the inter-action of two glands present in the brain called the hypothalamus and the pituitary. Working together, they from the Limbic system, a complex emotional and hormonal response mechanism to all external stimuli. In simple terms, this is why certain smells can make us happy, sad or revive memories, because our brain allows us to store the memory of smell in the same way it stores pictures and words for us. The physiological response is stimulated once the oils have been placed on the surface of the skin, whether or not they are then messaged into it. Essential oils pass through the skin's layers and are quickly absorbed into the blood and lymphatic systems which carry them around the body. Certain oils have target organs (e.g. peppermint which works on the digestive system, especially the bowel) but most work in a more generalized way or have qualities that benefit several areas including the nervous system at the same time. Either way, they are normally flushed out by the body's normal excretory processes within twelve hours of application. |
